There are a variety of different reasons that an Item Insight needs to be created and shared. An Insight may be necessary to inform leadership of changes to milestone dates associated with the Item, new risks or challenges that have arisen and changes to associated metrics. 

Bottom-line Up-front (BLUF) is a communication technique that Item Owners and Participants can utilize when writing Insights. This communication format leads with the most critical piece of information so that recipients of the information can easily and quickly identify the most relevant information. 

The author of the Insight should write succinctly about the purpose of the information and required next steps. 

Most critical status information will fall into three categories:  

  1. Decision: The author is requesting that the recipient make a call on something by a particular time 
  2. Action: The author is asking that you do something by a particular time 
  3. Inform: The author is passing along information that may or may not be relevant to you in some way 

The Title field in your Item Insight should often reflect one of the categories above.

The BLUF format should be designed as follows:

  1. BLUF Statement: This sentence identifies the purpose of the Insight in no more than 1-3 sentences. For example: (Action Required): Complete the Benefits Renewal Package NLT 3 May 2018 to renew your plan.
  2. Details: This section should include information that provides greater context for the recipient.
  3. Additional Context: This section includes information that is not absolutely necessary for a recipient to understand the BLUF message above.

Note: Both the details and additional context sections of a Item's Insight can be segmented further using categories like Risks, Best Practices, Milestones, Metrics, Recent Decisions, Recent Progress or Changes, etc.
